NTS TTMA-200 Trailer Truck Mounted Attenuator – MASH 2016 TL-3 Crash Cushion

A trailer-type crash attenuator that any 4.6 t truck can tow, protecting road-work crews from errant vehicles at 100 km/h.

The NTS TTMA-200 is a trailer truck mounted attenuator (TMA): a crash cushion on a trailer that is towed behind a work vehicle to absorb the impact of a vehicle that runs into a road-work zone. It hooks onto the truck's standard coupling, so any truck above 4.6 tonnes with a standard draw eye can be the shadow vehicle — no dedicated TMA truck. It is made by NTS (Nordic Traffic Safety).

The TTMA-200 has passed all four MASH 2016 Test Level 3 crash tests at 100 km/h.

The photographs on this page show a TTMA-200 at work on a highway in India: hooked to a standard truck's coupling, with the truck's LED arrow board, a cone taper and high-visibility "Slow Moving Vehicle" chevron panels.

At a glance

  • Model: NTS TTMA-200 trailer TMA
  • Crash tests: MASH 2016 TL-3 — tests 3-50, 3-51, 3-52 and 3-53 at 100 km/h; NCHRP 350 approved
  • Size: W 244 × H 79 × L 750 cm
  • Weight: 720 kg (without light panel)
  • Towing: any truck above 4.6 t with a standard draw eye
  • Finish: fully hot-dip galvanised

Why choose the TTMA-200

  • Any truck in your fleet — attaches to the standard coupling; no dedicated TMA vehicle and no extra attachments on the truck.
  • Fast deployment — no machines needed.
  • Always engaged — permanent protection while towed; arrow-board options are available on the unit itself, so no light arrow has to be fitted to the truck.
  • MASH 2016 TL-3 — all four tests passed at 100 km/h with a 2,270 kg pick-up and a 1,100 kg car, head-on, offset and angled.
  • Low repair cost — modular; impacts up to 15 km/h typically cause no severe damage, and medium-speed impacts mostly need only new bursting tubes, reflex plates and trailer lights.
  • Patented tube-bursting energy absorption.

Specifications

  • Toll-plaza and bridge maintenance
  • Tunnel maintenance and utility works on live roads

Trailer TMA versus a truck-mounted TMA

  • Trailer (TTMA-200): hooks onto any 4.6 t+ truck — the attenuator moves between vehicles and no truck is tied up as a dedicated TMA.
  • Truck-mounted: the cushion is fixed to one chassis; that truck must be available whenever protection is needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a truck mounted attenuator?

An energy-absorbing crash cushion carried behind a work vehicle so that a car or truck that drives into the work zone hits the cushion instead of the workers or the work vehicle.

Which trucks can tow the TTMA-200?

Every truck above 4.6 tonnes with a standard draw eye; draw-eye height 50–80 cm, with hitch extensions available for draw-eye heights up to 120 cm.

What crash standard does it meet?

MASH 2016 Test Level 3 — all four tests (3-50, 3-51, 3-52, 3-53) at 100 km/h with a 2,270 kg pick-up and a 1,100 kg car — and NCHRP 350.

How does it absorb the impact?

By patented tube bursting: a tapered mandrel is driven into an outer tube and splits it into four pieces that stay attached to the unit.

What does it cost to repair after an impact?

Low-speed impacts up to 15 km/h typically cause no severe damage; after medium-speed impacts usually only the bursting tubes, reflex plates and trailer lights are replaced, with a standard ratchet set.

How heavy is it?

720 kg without the light panel.
