How to choose and fit it

Sweep. A 1200 mm fan is the standard for a bedroom or living room of about 10 x 12 ft to 12 x 14 ft; use two fans, or a 1400 mm fan, for a hall; 900 mm suits a small room, kitchen or balcony and 600 mm a cabin or a very small room. This series comes in 900 and 1200 mm.

Motor. This is an induction-motor fan run from a wall regulator; it costs less to buy than a BLDC fan and is the usual choice where the fan runs a few hours a day. Polycab rates this series 1 star under the BEE label.

Air delivery. Compare fans by air delivery (CMM - cubic metres per minute) rather than watts: this series delivers 150 CMM (900 mm); 220 CMM (1200 mm). A higher ceiling or a bigger room wants more CMM.

Fitting. Hang the fan from a hook or J-bolt on a down rod so that the blades are at least 2.1 m above the floor; connect phase and neutral in the canopy. Use a fan regulator rated for the fan wattage; an electronic regulator is the usual choice.
