How to choose and fit

1. Pick the thread series and size from the drawing or the mating part: measure the diameter and pitch (or threads per inch) rather than guessing.
2. Choose the length: for a nut and bolt, add the grip (total thickness clamped) to the nut height plus two or three threads; for a tapped hole, allow at least one diameter of engagement in steel.
3. Choose the grade the designer specified: grade R (BS 1083) is the general-purpose high tensile grade, S, T and V for higher clamp loads; use nuts of matching grade.
4. Choose the finish for the environment: zinc phosphate for indoor or oiled use, trivalent zinc plating for mild exposure, hot dip galvanising or zinc flake coating for outdoor and corrosive sites.
5. Tighten to the torque the design calls for, with a washer under the turned element where needed, and use a nut of matching class.

What is the difference between a hex head cap screw and a hex head bolt?

Both have the same hexagon head; the screw is threaded all the way to the head, the bolt has a plain shank under the head and is threaded only at the end.
