How to choose and fit

1. Pick the thread series and size from the drawing or the mating part: measure the diameter and pitch (or threads per inch) rather than guessing.
2. Choose the length: for a nut and bolt, add the grip (total thickness clamped) to the nut height plus two or three threads; for a tapped hole, allow at least one diameter of engagement in steel.
3. Choose the grade the designer specified: grade 5 (SAE J429) is the general-purpose high tensile grade, grade 8 for higher clamp loads; use SAE J995 nuts of matching grade.

What is the difference between a hex head cap screw and a hex head bolt?

Both have the same hexagon head; the screw is threaded all the way to the head, the bolt has a plain shank under the head and is threaded only at the end.
