How to choose and fit it

Two protections in one. The RCBO trips on earth leakage at 100 mA, like an RCCB, and on overload and short circuit with a C curve (instant trip at 5 to 10 times its rating), like an MCB.

Why per-circuit RCBOs. When each circuit has its own RCBO, an earth leakage on one circuit switches off only that circuit - provided the board's incomer has no RCCB that trips on the same leakage. With one RCCB for the whole board, every circuit behind it goes off.

Sensitivity. 100 mA is used for protection of equipment circuits whose normal leakage is too high for a 30 mA device - machines, pumps and IT loads; it does not give people the shock protection of a 30 mA device. Polycab makes this RCBO in 30, 100 and 300 mA.

Rating. Choose a rating above the normal current of the circuit and within the current-carrying capacity of its cable, as for an MCB.

Testing. Press the test button regularly - many electricians advise once a month - to check that it still trips.
