The Polycab DP RCCB Type A is a double pole (2 pole) residual current circuit breaker (RCCB, often called an ELCB) made to IS 12640-1 and IEC 61008-1 for a single-phase supply - phase and neutral (240 V AC). As a Type A device it trips on AC earth-leakage currents and also on pulsating DC leakage currents, which single-phase appliances with electronic components can produce. Polycab lists it in 25, 40 and 63 A with 30, 100 or 300 mA sensitivity - nine item codes - in its switchgear technical catalogue (October 2024 edition), where it calls Type A "an upgrade of the AC type". It is supplied at a price on request.

Polycab India Limited is India's largest manufacturer of wires and cables, with 27 manufacturing facilities, 4,300+ authorised distributors, 2,00,000+ retailers and an export presence in 84 countries (polycab.com, October 2026). Is this the right one for you?

Check these six things before you order:

  • You need earth-leakage protection for a single-phase supply - phase and neutral (double pole).
  • The circuits feed single-phase appliances with electronic components - for example inverter air conditioners, washing machines, induction cooktops or computers - whose earth leakage can include pulsating DC, which a Type AC RCCB is not designed to detect. If the appliance maker specifies Type F or Type B, follow that instead.
  • The sensitivity suits the job: 30 mA for protection of people against electric shock, 100 mA for earth-fault and fire protection of equipment and groups of circuits, 300 mA for fire protection.
  • An MCB or fuse ahead of it gives the overload and short-circuit protection - an RCCB does not.
  • Its rated current (25, 40 or 63 A) is at least equal to the rating of the MCB that protects it.
  • These circuits have no EV charger or solar inverter - unless its maker allows a Type A RCCB, such as a charger with built-in 6 mA DC detection on its own 30 mA Type A RCCB that serves no other circuit. Otherwise the maker will usually specify a Type B device.

Why choose the Polycab DP RCCB Type A

  • Type A: detects pulsating DC leakage as well as AC leakage - Polycab calls it "an upgrade of the AC type"
  • Suits appliances with electronic components, as Polycab's catalogue describes - but not equipment that can leak smooth DC (see How to choose)
  • Electromechanical (functionally independent of line voltage) - it does not need the supply voltage to trip
  • Trips in 0.04 s or less at 5 times its rated sensitivity
  • Terminals up to 50 sq mm, with pin or fork busbar connection on both sides
  • Mounts vertically or horizontally on a 35 mm DIN rail
  • Flame-retardant thermoplastic case
  • Test button, real trip indicator and lockable knob, which Polycab's catalogue lists for its RCCB range (pp 37 and 38)
  • Nine item codes - every current rating and sensitivity

How to choose and fit it

Type A or Type AC. A Type AC RCCB is designed for sinusoidal AC leakage currents. Single-phase appliances with electronic power supplies - inverter air conditioners, washing machines, induction cooktops, computers and other equipment with single-phase rectifiers or switch-mode power supplies - can leak pulsating DC, which a Type A RCCB also detects. Three-phase drives and rectifiers can leak smooth DC, which it does not - see below. Polycab's regular DP and FP RCCBs, listed with their MRPs below, are Type AC; this page is the Type A version.

What Type A does not cover. A Type A RCCB does not trip on smooth DC leakage, and is designed to keep working correctly with up to 6 mA of it (IEC 61008-1). More than that - possible from EV chargers, solar inverters and three-phase drives - can stop it tripping even on an ordinary AC fault. Use Type A for such equipment only where its maker allows it - for example an EV charger with built-in 6 mA DC detection, on its own 30 mA Type A RCCB that serves no other circuit, or a solar inverter stated not to feed DC leakage. Otherwise the maker will call for a Type B device, and that device should not sit downstream of a Type A or Type AC RCCB.

Sensitivity. 30 mA protects people against electric shock - the sensitivity for socket outlets, bathrooms and kitchens, and for the whole installation of a smaller home; in a larger one, split the circuits between two or more RCCBs so normal appliance leakage does not add up to nuisance trips. 100 mA protects equipment and groups of circuits against earth faults and earth-leakage fires, and 300 mA protects against fires started by earth leakage; neither gives people the shock protection of a 30 mA device.

It does not replace the MCB. An RCCB detects earth leakage only. It has no overload or short-circuit protection, so it is always used with an MCB or fuse - usually the incomer MCB of the distribution board ahead of it.

Rated current. Choose 25, 40 or 63 A - at least the rating of the MCB that protects it.

Testing. Press the test button regularly - many electricians advise once a month - to check that it still trips.

Where it is used

  • homes and flats with inverter air conditioners, washing machines, induction cooktops and other appliances with electronics - as the main earth-leakage protection after the DP incomer MCB
  • offices and shops with computers and other electronic equipment
  • single-phase circuits where people need shock protection (30 mA)

Frequently asked questions

What is a Type A RCCB?

An RCCB that trips on sinusoidal AC earth-leakage currents and also on pulsating DC leakage currents. Polycab's catalogue calls Type A an upgrade of the AC type and says it suits appliances with electronic components. It is not designed for smooth DC leakage - see the EV charger question below.

Type A or Type AC - which do I need?

Type A, where the circuits feed single-phase appliances with electronic components - inverter air conditioners, washing machines, induction cooktops, computers - because their leakage can include pulsating DC, which Type AC is not designed to detect. Some makers of inverter air conditioners and washing machines ask for Type F, which is designed for single-phase variable-speed drives, or for Type B; where the appliance manual does, follow it - Polycab's catalogue lists Type AC and Type A RCCBs only. Where the manual asks for Type A or names no type, Type A is the step up from Type AC. Polycab's Type AC RCCBs are listed under Other Polycab RCCBs, with their MRPs.

Will it fit where my Type AC DP RCCB is?

Polycab lists the same width for both types - 36 mm for the DP - with the same 50 sq mm terminals and pin or fork busbar connection on both sides. Check the busbar in your board and ask us if in doubt.

Does a Type A RCCB detect DC leakage from EV chargers or solar inverters?

It detects pulsating DC but not smooth DC, and is designed to keep working correctly with up to 6 mA of smooth DC; more than that can stop it tripping even on an ordinary AC fault. Use a Type A RCCB for an EV charger or solar inverter only where its maker allows it - for example a charger with built-in 6 mA DC detection, or an inverter stated not to feed DC leakage - and give the charger its own 30 mA Type A RCCB that serves no other circuit; otherwise the maker will specify a Type B device.

Which sensitivity should I choose - 30, 100 or 300 mA?

30 mA for protection of people against electric shock; 100 mA for earth-fault and fire protection of equipment and groups of circuits; 300 mA for protection against fires caused by earth leakage. The 100 and 300 mA versions do not give people the shock protection of a 30 mA device.

Does an RCCB protect against overload and short circuit?

No. An RCCB only detects current leaking to earth. Use it with an MCB or fuse for overload and short-circuit protection.

What is the price?

Price on request: call +91 9340081159 with the current rating, sensitivity, quantity and delivery location. Each combination has its own item code - for example GMR302P005 for 40 A, 30 mA. Polycab's Type A codes start GMR302 (DP) and GMR304 (FP); its Type AC codes start GMR502 and GMR504, so check the digit after GMR when you order.
