Is this the right one for you?
Check these five things before you order:
- You are protecting one single-phase circuit from the distribution board (single pole).
- Your load suits a B curve: lighting, heating and resistive loads.
- The prospective short-circuit current where the MCB is fitted does not exceed 6 kA.
- The rating you need is 6, 10, 16, 20, 25 or 32 A - the rating must suit the cable it protects.
- The installation does not call for a 10 kA breaker - for higher fault levels use the 10 kA range.

Why choose the Polycab 6kA B-Curve SP MCB
- Finger-proof IP20 terminals
- Air-flow channels to keep the breaker cool
- 13-plate arc chute for quick arc quenching
- Line-load reversibility - it can be fed from the top or the bottom
- Energy limiting class 3 and low power loss, as Polycab's catalogue lists for the 6 kA range
- Polycab item code and MRP for every rating, so the order matches the drawing - GMM501P001 to GMM501P006
How to choose and fit it
Tripping curve. Under IS/IEC 60898-1, a B-curve MCB trips instantly at 3 to 5 times its rated current, a C-curve at 5 to 10 times and a D-curve at 10 to 20 times. This B-curve breaker trips instantly at 3 to 5 times its rating, which suits resistive and lightly inductive loads with little switch-on surge - lighting, heaters, geysers and general socket circuits, and long cable runs where the fault current is low.
Poles. A single pole MCB is used for a single-phase final circuit - it protects the phase conductor of one circuit leaving the distribution board. In the 6 kA B-curve range Polycab lists SP.
Breaking capacity. 6 kA is the largest short-circuit current the breaker can safely interrupt. Choose a breaking capacity at least equal to the prospective fault current where it is fitted - your electrician or consultant checks this at the board.
Rating. The MCB rating must be above the normal current of the load and must not exceed the current-carrying capacity of the cable it protects. As a rough guide in homes: 6 A or 10 A for lighting circuits and 16 A to 25 A for geyser, heater and other resistive-load circuits; the cable size and the load decide the final choice.
Mounting. It clips on a standard DIN rail inside a distribution board or MCB enclosure.
Where it is used
- lighting and heating final circuits in homes, flats, offices and shops
- geysers, heaters and other resistive loads
- long cable runs where the fault current is low
- outgoing ways of SPN and TPN distribution boards
- homes, flats and small shops

Frequently asked questions
What does "B curve" mean on an MCB?
It describes how quickly the breaker trips on a surge. Under IS/IEC 60898-1 a B-curve MCB trips instantly at 3 to 5 times its rated current, which suits lighting, heating and resistive loads. B trips at 3 to 5 times, C at 5 to 10 times and D at 10 to 20 times the rating.
Which pole type do I need?
SP protects one single-phase circuit; SPN switches the neutral together with the phase; DP switches and protects phase and neutral of a single-phase supply; TP is for three-phase loads without neutral; TPN switches the neutral together with the three phases; FP switches all four poles of a three-phase supply with neutral and is the usual incomer of a TPN distribution board. This page is the single pole (SP) version; in the 6 kA B-curve range Polycab lists SP.
Should I choose a 10 kA or a 6 kA MCB?
Choose a breaking capacity at least equal to the prospective short-circuit current at the board. 6 kA is common in homes; 10 kA is the safer choice for commercial buildings, boards close to the transformer and industrial supplies. Polycab makes the SP B-curve MCB in both.
Do I still need an RCCB with an MCB?
Yes, for protection against electric shock and earth-leakage fires. An MCB protects against overload and short circuit only; an RCCB (or an RCBO, which combines both) detects current leaking to earth.
