Is this the right one for you?
Check these five things before you order:
- It will be the incomer of a TPN distribution board - Polycab makes its TPN boards for an FP incoming MCB - or switch all four conductors of another three-phase circuit with neutral (four pole).
- Your load suits a C curve: three-phase pumps, compressors, motors and mixed three-phase loads.
- The prospective short-circuit current where the MCB is fitted does not exceed 6 kA.
- The rating you need is 32, 40 or 63 A - the rating must suit the cable it protects.
- The installation does not call for a 10 kA breaker - for higher fault levels use the 10 kA range.

Why choose the Polycab 6kA C-Curve FP MCB
- Finger-proof IP20 terminals
- Air-flow channels to keep the breaker cool
- 13-plate arc chute for quick arc quenching
- Line-load reversibility - it can be fed from the top or the bottom
- Energy limiting class 3 and low power loss, as Polycab's catalogue lists for the 6 kA range
- Polycab item code and MRP for every rating, so the order matches the drawing - GMM604P006 to GMM604P008
How to choose and fit it
Tripping curve. Under IS/IEC 60898-1, a B-curve MCB trips instantly at 3 to 5 times its rated current, a C-curve at 5 to 10 times and a D-curve at 10 to 20 times. This C-curve breaker trips instantly at 5 to 10 times its rating, which suits three-phase loads with a moderate switch-on surge - pumps, compressors, air-handling units, motors and the mixed loads of three-phase sub-boards; it is the most widely used curve.
Poles. A four pole MCB is used for the incomer of a three-phase distribution board, or any three-phase circuit with neutral, with all four poles switched. In the 6 kA C-curve range Polycab lists SP, SPN, DP, TP and FP.
Breaking capacity. 6 kA is the largest short-circuit current the breaker can safely interrupt. Choose a breaking capacity at least equal to the prospective fault current where it is fitted - your electrician or consultant checks this at the board.
Rating. Choose a rating above the running current of the load and within the current-carrying capacity of the cable it protects; for motors, also check the starting current against the curve and the motor maker's recommendation.
Mounting. It clips on a standard DIN rail inside a distribution board or MCB enclosure.
Where it is used
- incomer of TPN distribution boards in homes, offices and shops
- three-phase sub-mains and feeders with neutral
- three-phase machines and equipment with neutral
- homes, flats and small shops

Frequently asked questions
What does "C curve" mean on an MCB?
It describes how quickly the breaker trips on a surge. Under IS/IEC 60898-1 a C-curve MCB trips instantly at 5 to 10 times its rated current, which suits three-phase pumps, compressors, motors and mixed three-phase loads. B trips at 3 to 5 times, C at 5 to 10 times and D at 10 to 20 times the rating.
Which pole type do I need?
SP protects one single-phase circuit; SPN switches the neutral together with the phase; DP switches and protects phase and neutral of a single-phase supply; TP is for three-phase loads without neutral; TPN switches the neutral together with the three phases; FP switches all four poles of a three-phase supply with neutral and is the usual incomer of a TPN distribution board. This page is the four pole (FP) version; in the 6 kA C-curve range Polycab lists SP, SPN, DP, TP and FP.
Should I choose a 10 kA or a 6 kA MCB?
Choose a breaking capacity at least equal to the prospective short-circuit current at the board. 6 kA is common in homes; 10 kA is the safer choice for commercial buildings, boards close to the transformer and industrial supplies. Polycab makes the FP C-curve MCB in both.
TPN or FP - which do I need?
Both switch the three phases and the neutral together. A TPN (3 pole + N) breaker has three protected poles and a switched neutral; an FP (4 pole) breaker has four poles and is the incomer Polycab makes its TPN distribution boards for. If you are not sure which your board or circuit needs, ask us or your electrician. There is no TPN version in the 6 kA range; Polycab makes the TPN MCB only as the 10 kA C curve.
Do I still need an RCCB with an MCB?
Yes, for protection against electric shock and earth-leakage fires. An MCB protects against overload and short circuit only; an RCCB (or an RCBO, which combines both) detects current leaking to earth.
What is the MRP of the Polycab 32 A 6kA C-curve FP MCB?
