How a magnetic core drill works

The electromagnetic base locks the drill onto steel, so holes can be drilled on beams, columns and plates where they lie — horizontally, vertically or overhead. Annular (core / broach) cutters remove only a ring of metal, so they cut large holes quickly and accurately with less power than a twist drill. Use the safety strap, feed coolant to the cutter, and work on steel at least as thick as the maker recommends for full magnetic hold.

Where it is used

  • Steel structures, bridges and towers
  • Fabrication of beams, columns, base plates and flanges
  • Railway, shipbuilding and plant maintenance
  • Holes on site where the work cannot be moved

Frequently asked questions

Which should I choose — the MEGA 80 or the COMMANDO 75?

The MEGA 80 cuts larger cores (80 mm against 75 mm) and is lighter (18 kg against 22.8 kg); the Ralli Wolf COMMANDO 75 has the stronger 18500 N magnet and a 240 mm stroke.

What cutters does the MEGA 80 take?

Annular (core) cutters up to 80 mm diameter × 80 mm deep, twist drills up to 28 mm and taps up to M24. Spindle / adaptor: MT3.

Can the MEGA 80 drill on vertical or overhead steel?

Yes — the electromagnetic base holds it on beams, columns and plates in any position. Always fit the safety strap, and drill on clean, flat steel thick enough for full magnetic hold.
