Is this the right one for you?

Check these four things before you order:

  • The cable is for a ship, an offshore unit or a marine installation.
  • You know the circuit type: power, control or instrumentation, and the voltage grade.
  • You know whether the vessel needs cable approved by a classification society, such as the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), DNV, ABS or Lloyd's Register.
  • You know whether halogen-free, fire-resistant or mud-resistant versions are needed.

Why choose the Polycab Marine and Offshore Cable

  • From 0.15/0.25 kV control and instrumentation cables up to 18/30 kV power cables
  • Tinned copper conductors for salt-laden air
  • EPR, XLPE, silicone or halogen-free XLPO insulation
  • Unarmoured, or metallic braid armoured - the braid is flexible and easy to gland on board
  • Halogen-free and mud-resistant offshore options (NEK 606)
  • Custom designs to customer specifications

How to choose and specify it

Standard. IEC 60092-350 sets the general construction and tests for shipboard power, control and instrumentation cables up to 18/30 (36) kV; IEC 60092-353 covers 1 kV and 3 kV power cables and IEC 60092-376 the 150/250 V control and instrumentation cables. NEK 606 is the Norwegian offshore specification, and BS 6883 / BS 7917 are the British ship-wiring standards.

Class approval. Ships and offshore units usually need cables approved by the classification society. Tell us the class (for example IRS, DNV, ABS or Lloyd's Register) and we confirm the approval status for each type with Polycab.

Fire and mud. For accommodation and enclosed spaces, choose a halogen-free cable: PCP and CSP sheaths contain chlorine, so ask for a halogen-free (HF) rubber sheath over halogen-free insulation (the catalogue lists XLPO HF; we confirm HF versions of the other insulations). Choose fire-resistant types (BS 7917) for emergency circuits, and mud-resistant types where drilling fluids are present.

Medium voltage and armour. MV ship cables (6 kV and above) are normally specified to IEC 60092-354, which the catalogue does not list, or, up to 8.7/15 kV, to BS 6883 - tell us your specification and we confirm the MV construction with Polycab. Single-core cables on AC circuits need a non-magnetic (for example tinned copper) braid; tell us the circuit.

Glands. In hazardous areas offshore, use Ex-certified glands suited to the cable. Terminate and earth the braid as the yard, class or project rules require, in a gland that clamps the braid or with a separate earthing clamp.

Where it is used

  • Shipbuilding and ship repair - power, lighting and control wiring
  • Offshore platforms, rigs and FPSOs
  • Naval and coast guard vessels
  • Dredgers, tugs and barges
  • Port and harbour craft
