HEX EARTHCON Earth Enhancing Compound – 12.5 kg, Lowest Self Resistivity (0.098 Ω·m) in the HEX Range

Carbon and bentonite ground enhancing compound with the lowest self resistivity in the HEX range — for most soils, RoHS compliant, IEC 62561-7 tested.

EARTHCON is the compound with the lowest self resistivity in the HEX range — 0.098 Ω·m, about half that of the next-best HEX compound. Packed around an earth electrode, it lowers the resistivity of the surrounding soil by about 65% per bag per metre (HEX figure), and it suits most soils. It is the only HEX compound that combines carbon and bentonite with all five working agents — dispersion, diffusion, ionising, expanding and hygroscopic. EARTHCON (Regular grade) is packed in 12.5 kg bags.

Self resistivity is the resistivity of the compound itself: the lower it is, the more conductive the zone it builds around the rod. A conductive, moisture-holding zone makes the electrode behave as if it were far thicker, which is how a compound brings earth resistance down where more rods would not. It is part of the HEX range of ground enhancing chemical compounds (HEX is the earthing and cable-accessories brand of Brass Copper & Alloy (I) Ltd.).

At a glance

  • Bag: 12.5 kg
  • Self resistivity: 0.098 Ω·m — the lowest in the HEX range
  • Approx. reduction in soil resistivity: about 65% per bag per metre
  • pH: 7.5 to 8.5
  • Soil types: most
  • Constituents: carbon, bentonite, dispersion, diffusion, ionising, expanding and hygroscopic agents
  • Compliance: RoHS compliant; tested for compliance with IEC 62561-7

Why choose EARTHCON

  • Lowest self resistivity of the five HEX compounds — 0.098 Ω·m.
  • Second-largest reduction — about 65% per bag per metre, behind only TEREC+.
  • Carbon, bentonite and all five agents — dispersion, diffusion, ionising, expanding and hygroscopic.
  • Mid-size 12.5 kg bags — half the weight of a 25 kg sack and easier to handle on site.
  • RoHS compliant and non-corrosive — safe for the soil and compatible with all types of earthing electrode.
  • Steady in all weathers, with a long shelf life.

How EARTHCON works

EARTHCON goes around the electrode in the bore or trench before the excavation is backfilled. Carbon gives the zone its conductivity; bentonite and the hygroscopic agents hold moisture; ionising agents keep ions available; and expanding agents keep the compound tight against the soil. The result is a wide, conductive shell around the rod that keeps the resistance low and stable across seasons.

Where it is used

  • Substations, switchyards and transformer neutral earthing
  • Telecom and broadcast towers
  • Industrial plants, data centres and commercial buildings
  • Lightning-protection earth pits
  • Most soil types (HEX rating) where a highly conductive backfill is wanted

Which HEX earth enhancing compound do I need?

  • TEREC+ — the largest quoted reduction, about 75% per bag per metre; bentonite free; rated for all soil types; 5 kg bags.
  • EARTHCON (this page) — the lowest self resistivity of the range, 0.098 Ω·m; about 65% reduction; carbon and bentonite based; 12.5 kg bags.
  • TERRAPRO — bentonite free and HEX-made; 0.18 Ω·m; about 60% reduction; 25 kg bags.
  • TERRAHEX — HEX-made carbon and bentonite backfill with hygroscopic agents; 0.80 Ω·m; about 55% reduction; 25 kg bags.
  • TERRANITE — carbon free, bentonite based; 0.91 Ω·m; about 50% reduction; for normal soils; 25 kg bags.
  • Not sure? Send the soil resistivity report, the equipment to be earthed and the target resistance, and the right compound or blend is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

What is the self resistivity of EARTHCON?

HEX lists 0.098 Ω·m — the lowest of its five earth enhancing compounds (TERRAPRO 0.18, TEREC+ 0.2, TERRAHEX 0.80 and TERRANITE 0.91 Ω·m).

How much does EARTHCON reduce soil resistivity?

About 65% per bag per metre, as quoted by HEX. What you measure on site depends on the soil, the electrode and the quantity used.

Does EARTHCON contain bentonite?

Yes — it contains both carbon and bentonite, together with dispersion, diffusion, ionising, expanding and hygroscopic agents.

EARTHCON or TEREC+?

TEREC+ gives the larger quoted reduction (about 75%), is bentonite free and suits all soils, in 5 kg bags. EARTHCON has the lower self resistivity (0.098 against 0.2 Ω·m) and suits most soils, in 12.5 kg bags.

How many bags do I need?

That depends on the bore or trench size, the electrode length, the soil resistivity and the earth resistance you need. Send those details and the number of bags — or a blend of HEX compounds — is worked out for you.

Is it safe for the soil and the earth electrode?

Yes. HEX states that its compounds are RoHS compliant and do not pollute the surrounding soil, and that they are non-corrosive and compatible with all types of earthing electrode.
