HEX TERRAHEX is HEX's own back fill compound for earth electrodes. It combines carbon and bentonite with ionising, expanding and hygroscopic agents, so it both conducts and holds moisture around the rod. HEX quotes a reduction in soil resistivity of about 55% per bag per metre; it suits most soils and comes in 25 kg (55 lb) bags. It is also the compound whose test reports HEX lists in its catalogue — RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and IEC 62561-7 / EN 12457-2. Made by HEX, the brand of Brass Copper & Alloy (I) Ltd., Mumbai — an ISO 9001 company.
Why use a compound at all? Clause 14.5 of IEEE 80:2013 notes that adding more conductors or rods often cannot bring ground resistance down far enough, and that an alternative is to effectively increase the electrode's diameter by modifying the soil around it. Backfilling with TERRAHEX does exactly that.
At a glance
- Bag: 25 kg (55 lb)
- Approx. reduction in soil resistivity: about 55% per bag per metre
- Self resistivity: 0.80 Ω·m
- pH: 7.5 to 8.5
- Soil types: most
- Constituents: carbon, bentonite, ionising, expanding and hygroscopic agents
- Test reports: RoHS 2011/65/EU (TCR Engineering Services, India); IEC 62561-7 / EN 12457-2 (Spectro Analytical Labs, India)
Why choose TERRAHEX
- Holds moisture — bentonite and hygroscopic agents keep moisture in the zone around the electrode.
- Tested and documented — RoHS 2011/65/EU and IEC 62561-7 / EN 12457-2 test reports listed in the HEX catalogue.
- About 55% lower soil resistivity per bag per metre (HEX figure).
- Made by HEX, in 25 kg bags marked "TERRAHEX Back Fill Compound".
- Non-corrosive and eco-friendly — compatible with all types of earthing electrode; does not pollute the soil.
- Long shelf life and stable performance in all weathers.

How TERRAHEX works
Packed around the electrode in the bore or trench, TERRAHEX forms a conductive zone far larger than the rod, so current passes into the soil over a bigger surface. Its bentonite and hygroscopic constituents hold moisture, its ionising agents keep ions available, and its expanding agents keep close contact with the soil — which is why the resistance stays stable across seasons.
Where it is used
- Most soil types (HEX rating)
- Substations, towers and telecom sites needing a low earth resistance
- Lightning-protection earth pits
- Upgrading existing earth pits that no longer meet their target resistance
Which HEX earth enhancing compound do I need?
- TEREC+ — the largest quoted reduction, about 75% per bag per metre; bentonite free; rated for all soil types; 5 kg bags.
- EARTHCON — the lowest self resistivity of the range, 0.098 Ω·m; about 65% reduction; carbon and bentonite based; 12.5 kg bags.
- TERRAPRO — bentonite free and HEX-made; 0.18 Ω·m; about 60% reduction; 25 kg bags.
- TERRAHEX (this page) — HEX-made carbon and bentonite backfill with hygroscopic agents; 0.80 Ω·m; about 55% reduction; 25 kg bags.
- TERRANITE — carbon free, bentonite based; 0.91 Ω·m; about 50% reduction; for normal soils; 25 kg bags.
- Not sure? Send the soil resistivity report, the equipment to be earthed and the target resistance, and the right compound or blend is recommended.

Frequently asked questions
What is TERRAHEX?
HEX's back fill compound for earthing: carbon and bentonite with ionising, expanding and hygroscopic agents, packed in 25 kg bags and made by Brass Copper & Alloy (I) Ltd.
How much does TERRAHEX reduce soil resistivity?
HEX quotes about 55% per bag per metre. The final earth resistance depends on the soil, the electrode and the quantity used.
What is TERRAHEX tested to?
RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU (TCR Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd., India) and IEC 62561-7 / EN 12457-2 (Spectro Analytical Labs, India).
TERRAHEX or TERRAPRO?
TERRAPRO is bentonite free, with a lower self resistivity (0.18 against 0.80 Ω·m) and a larger quoted reduction (about 60% against 55%). TERRAHEX contains bentonite and hygroscopic agents that hold moisture around the rod. Both are HEX-made, in 25 kg bags, and they can be blended.
How many bags do I need?
That depends on the bore or trench size, the electrode length, the soil resistivity and the earth resistance you need. Send those details and the number of bags — or a blend of HEX compounds — is worked out for you.
Is it safe for the soil and the earth electrode?
Yes. HEX states that its compounds are RoHS compliant and do not pollute the surrounding soil, and that they are non-corrosive and compatible with all types of earthing electrode.
