HEX TERRAPRO is a bentonite-free ground enhancing material made by HEX. Its carbon base, with dispersion, diffusion, ionising and expanding agents, gives a low self resistivity of 0.18 Ω·m, and HEX quotes a reduction in soil resistivity of about 60% per bag per metre. It suits most soils and is packed in 25 kg (55 lb) bags printed "Ground Enhancing Material — Without Bentonite". Made by HEX, the brand of Brass Copper & Alloy (I) Ltd., Mumbai — an ISO 9001 company.

Some earthing specifications ask for a backfill without bentonite. TERRAPRO meets that and still has the second-lowest self resistivity of the five HEX compounds, and a larger quoted reduction than HEX's bentonite-based TERRAHEX. It works without bentonite or hygroscopic (moisture-attracting) agents, and it is alkaline, with a pH of 9 to 10.

How TERRAPRO works

TERRAPRO is placed around the electrode in the bore or trench, and the excavation is backfilled. Its carbon base forms a conductive zone far wider than the rod itself, while the dispersion, diffusion and ionising agents spread that conductivity into the neighbouring soil and the expanding agents keep firm contact with it. Current therefore leaves the electrode over a much bigger surface, and the earth resistance falls.

Where it is used

  • Projects whose specification calls for a bentonite-free backfill
  • Substations, transmission towers and power plants
  • Telecom sites, data centres and commercial buildings
  • Lightning-protection earth pits
  • Renewing earth pits that no longer meet their target resistance

Which HEX earth enhancing compound do I need?

  • TEREC+ — the largest quoted reduction, about 75% per bag per metre; bentonite free; rated for all soil types; 5 kg bags.
  • EARTHCON — the lowest self resistivity of the range, 0.098 Ω·m; about 65% reduction; carbon and bentonite based; 12.5 kg bags.
  • TERRAPRO (this page) — bentonite free and HEX-made; 0.18 Ω·m; about 60% reduction; 25 kg bags.
  • TERRAHEX — HEX-made carbon and bentonite backfill with hygroscopic agents; 0.80 Ω·m; about 55% reduction; 25 kg bags.
  • TERRANITE — carbon free, bentonite based; 0.91 Ω·m; about 50% reduction; for normal soils; 25 kg bags.
  • Not sure? Send the soil resistivity report, the equipment to be earthed and the target resistance, and the right compound or blend is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Is TERRAPRO bentonite free?

Yes. TERRAPRO contains no bentonite — the bag itself is printed "Ground Enhancing Material — Without Bentonite". It uses carbon with dispersion, diffusion, ionisation and expansion agents.

How much does TERRAPRO reduce soil resistivity?

About 60% per bag per metre, as quoted by HEX. The final earth resistance depends on the soil, the electrode and the quantity used.

TERRAPRO or TERRAHEX — which should I use?

TERRAPRO is bentonite free, with the lower self resistivity (0.18 against 0.80 Ω·m) and the larger quoted reduction (about 60% against 55%). TERRAHEX contains bentonite and hygroscopic agents that hold moisture around the rod. Both are rated by HEX for most soil types and come in 25 kg HEX bags.

Can it be blended with other HEX compounds?

Yes. The HEX compounds can be used on their own or blended with each other to improve performance. Give the soil resistivity of the site and the equipment to be earthed, and the optimum blend is recommended.

How many bags do I need?

That depends on the bore or trench size, the electrode length, the soil resistivity and the earth resistance you need. Send those details and the number of bags — or a blend of HEX compounds — is worked out for you.

Is it safe for the soil and the earth electrode?

Yes. HEX states that its compounds are RoHS compliant and do not pollute the surrounding soil, and that they are non-corrosive and compatible with all types of earthing electrode.
