TERRANITE is the carbon-free compound in the HEX range of ground enhancing chemical compounds. Bentonite based, with dispersion, diffusion, ionising, expanding and hygroscopic agents, it lowers the resistivity of the soil around an electrode by about 50% per bag per metre (HEX figure) and is intended for normal soils. It comes in 25 kg bags marked "Earth Enhancing Compound — tested as per IEC 62561-7". It is part of the HEX range of ground enhancing chemical compounds (HEX is the earthing and cable-accessories brand of Brass Copper & Alloy (I) Ltd.).
Where a specification rules out carbon in the backfill, or the soil is of normal resistivity and a moderate improvement is enough, TERRANITE is the straightforward choice. Outside normal soils, choose TEREC+ (the only compound HEX rates for all soils) or EARTHCON, TERRAPRO or TERRAHEX (rated for most soils); all four quote larger reductions.
At a glance

How TERRANITE works
TERRANITE is placed around the electrode in the bore or trench, and the excavation is backfilled. Its bentonite and hygroscopic agents draw in and hold moisture, the ionising agents supply the ions that carry current, and the dispersion and diffusion agents spread that effect into the surrounding soil, while the expanding agents keep firm contact. The rod behaves as if it were much thicker, and the earth resistance drops.
Where it is used
- Normal soils where a moderate reduction in earth resistance is enough
- Projects that specify a carbon-free backfill
- Buildings, commercial and residential earthing
- Equipment and lightning-protection earth pits
Which HEX earth enhancing compound do I need?
- TEREC+ — the largest quoted reduction, about 75% per bag per metre; bentonite free; rated for all soil types; 5 kg bags.
- EARTHCON — the lowest self resistivity of the range, 0.098 Ω·m; about 65% reduction; carbon and bentonite based; 12.5 kg bags.
- TERRAPRO — bentonite free and HEX-made; 0.18 Ω·m; about 60% reduction; 25 kg bags.
- TERRAHEX — HEX-made carbon and bentonite backfill with hygroscopic agents; 0.80 Ω·m; about 55% reduction; 25 kg bags.
- TERRANITE (this page) — carbon free, bentonite based; 0.91 Ω·m; about 50% reduction; for normal soils; 25 kg bags.
- Not sure? Send the soil resistivity report, the equipment to be earthed and the target resistance, and the right compound or blend is recommended.

Frequently asked questions
Does TERRANITE contain carbon?
No. TERRANITE is carbon free; it is bentonite based, with dispersion, diffusion, ionising, expanding and hygroscopic agents.
How much does TERRANITE reduce soil resistivity?
About 50% per bag per metre, as quoted by HEX, in normal soils. The final earth resistance depends on the soil, the electrode and the quantity used.
Which soils is TERRANITE for?
HEX rates it for normal soils. Outside normal soils, choose TEREC+ (the only compound HEX rates for all soils) or EARTHCON, TERRAPRO or TERRAHEX (rated for most soils); all four quote larger reductions.
Is TERRANITE tested?
Yes — the bag is marked as tested as per IEC 62561-7, and HEX states its compounds are RoHS compliant.
How many bags do I need?
That depends on the bore or trench size, the electrode length, the soil resistivity and the earth resistance you need. Send those details and the number of bags — or a blend of HEX compounds — is worked out for you.
Is it safe for the soil and the earth electrode?
Yes. HEX states that its compounds are RoHS compliant and do not pollute the surrounding soil, and that they are non-corrosive and compatible with all types of earthing electrode.
