How to choose and specify it

Screening. In a multi-pair analogue cable, an individual screen on each pair plus an overall screen (IS-OS) greatly reduces crosstalk between pairs and outside noise. Earth each screen - through its drain wire on foil screens - usually at one end only (commonly the control-room end), so that no earth-loop current flows in it.

Elements. Pairs suit 4-20 mA loops and most signals; triads suit 3-wire RTDs; quads are used for some RTD and communication circuits. Count the signals on the run and add spare pairs.

Protection. GI armour protects buried and exposed runs. In refineries and chemical plants a lead-alloy sheath keeps hydrocarbons out; a polyamide sheath protects against termites. The catalogue lists both on request. In hazardous areas, use Ex-certified glands suited to the cable - armoured or unarmoured.

Sheath and fire behaviour. Use FRLS or LSOH sheaths in control rooms, tunnels and enclosed plants where smoke matters.
