HEX Stainless Steel Earth Rods – UL Listed, 5/8", 3/4" and 1" Diameter, up to 3.05 m Long

Stainless steel grounding rods that avoid galvanic corrosion between dissimilar buried metals and resist corrosion themselves.

HEX stainless steel earth rods are used to overcome the problems caused by galvanic corrosion, which can take place between dissimilar metals buried close to one another — for example next to steel pipelines, tanks or foundations. The rods are themselves highly resistant to corrosion. Made by HEX, the brand of Brass Copper & Alloy (I) Ltd., Mumbai — an ISO 9001 company whose products are tested by CPRI (India), UL (USA), KEMA (Netherlands) and SIRIM (Malaysia).

At a glance

  • Material: stainless steel
  • Diameters: 5/8" (14.2 mm), 3/4" (17.2 mm), 1" (23.1 mm)
  • Lengths: 5, 8 and 10 ft (1.52, 2.44, 3.05 m)
  • UL listed: HSS-148, HSS-1410, HSS-1710, HSS-2410
  • Tested: 19 mm rod: chemical analysis, electrical resistivity and tensile strength at CPRI

Why choose stainless steel rods

  • Avoids galvanic corrosion where the electrode is buried near other metals.
  • Highly corrosion resistant in its own right.
  • UL listed codes in 5/8", 3/4" and 1" sizes.
  • Tested for chemistry, resistivity and tensile strength at CPRI (19 mm rod).

Specifications

  • 5/8" (14.2 mm): HSS-145: 5 ft, 2.05 kg, pack of 10; HSS-148: 8 ft, 3.28 kg, pack of 10 (UL); HSS-1410: 10 ft, 4.10 kg, pack of 10 (UL)
  • 3/4" (17.2 mm): HSS-175: 5 ft, 2.75 kg, pack of 5; HSS-1710: 10 ft, 5.50 kg, pack of 5 (UL)
  • 1" (23.1 mm): HSS-2410: 10 ft, 10.23 kg, pack of 1 (UL)
  • Unthreaded rod accessories: couplers HERC (copper alloy) and driving heads HDSU (high-tensile steel) — specify rod diameter

Where it is used

  • Earthing near steel pipelines, tanks and structures
  • Oil & gas and petrochemical sites
  • Water and effluent treatment plants
  • Cathodically protected areas where mixed metals are buried

Which earth rod do I need?

  • Copper-bonded steel — the everyday choice: steel strength to drive deep, copper surface for low resistance; 25 µm standard, 250–254 µm for long life and UL listing.
  • Solid copper — the most corrosion-resistant, for very aggressive or salty soils.
  • Copper-clad steel — a 250 µm copper tube pressed onto a steel core, when a thick, even copper layer is specified.
  • Stainless steel (this page) — where the rod is buried close to other metals and galvanic corrosion is the concern.

Frequently asked questions

Why use a stainless steel earth rod?

To avoid galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals buried close together, and because stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion.

Which HEX stainless steel rods are UL listed?

HSS-148, HSS-1410, HSS-1710 and HSS-2410.

What sizes are available?

5/8" (14.2 mm) in 5, 8 and 10 ft; 3/4" (17.2 mm) in 5 and 10 ft; 1" (23.1 mm) in 10 ft.

How are unthreaded rods joined and driven?

With HERC copper-alloy couplers and HDSU high-tensile steel driving heads; state the rod diameter when ordering.
